Little Torberry Hill

The walk up Little Torberry Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Petersfield, and it's worth every step. You're looking at roughly 280 metres of elevation - nothing daunting, but enough to earn the views when you reach the top. On a clear day, the South Downs unfold in front of you like a properly satisfying reward for the effort.

It's an Iron Age hill fort, though honestly you won't see dramatic ramparts or stone structures. What you get instead is the landscape itself - open downland, the kind of place where you can feel why ancient people chose to settle here. Walkers love it. Families with reasonably fit kids do well here too, though it's not a casual stroll. The path can be muddy in winter, so check conditions before you head out.

Free to visit, naturally - no gates, no entrance fees. Allow an hour and a bit if you're not rushing, half that if you're just bagging the peak. Spring and early summer are best; the wildflowers make the downland genuinely lovely, and you won't be melting in the heat.

The location works well with that side of Hampshire too - combines nicely with chalk stream walks and the wider South Downs circuit. Not a destination by itself, but absolutely the kind of local treasure that makes a park holiday feel less generic.
