Little Sca Fell

Little Sca Fell sits at 2,145 feet in the northern Lake District, a proper fell rather than the kind of mountain that dominates the postcards. From Keswick it's an accessible climb, rewarding without being brutal - typically done in three to four hours return depending on your pace and which route you fancy.

The fell itself is rocky and windswept at the top, with views that stretch across to Blencathra and down into the Caldbeck valley below. On a clear day you can see Skiddaw looming larger to the south. The ascent takes you through fell moorland and rough grass; it's not a manicured path, but it's well-trodden enough that you won't get lost if you're paying attention.

It's the kind of hill that works best for walkers who want a decent walk without signing up for a major peak-bagging expedition. Families with older kids (say, aged ten and up) will manage it fine, though younger legs might find it a slog. The summit's not massive so don't expect to spend hours up there - twenty minutes with a flask of tea and you'll be ready to head down.

Stay in one of the campsites within easy reach - Kestrel Lodge is only three miles out, or Caldbeck Camping if you want to be closer to the northern approaches. Combine it with a walk around Thirlmere or a potter around Keswick town itself. Little Sca Fell works best as part of a broader walking holiday rather than a standalone destination, but as a morning's walk it's honestly time well spent.
