Little Round Hill

The walk up Little Round Hill takes barely twenty minutes, which is precisely why it's so good. You're not scrambling for hours through boggy moorland - just a straightforward climb from the Carnforth side that rewards you with proper views across the Lune Valley and back towards the Lake District fells. The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. It's the sort of place where you feel like you've actually accomplished something without needing a packed lunch and walking poles.

This is ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after a quick leg-stretch during a holiday in the area. The gradient is manageable, the path is clear, and there's enough of a proper fell walk about it to feel like you've done some walking. Give it forty-five minutes from car to car if you're not in a rush, or half that if you know what you're doing.

North Yorkshire's a cracking base for low-key outdoor time, and Little Round Hill sits nicely between the gentler attractions and the serious hiking. Philpin Farm Campsite is only a few miles away and Ribblesdale Pods if you want something with a bit more comfort to return to. The limestone country around Carnforth has layers of interest - geology, industrial heritage, the canal - so this works well as part of a longer morning before you head elsewhere. It's the sort of hill that locals use as a quick fix rather than a destination in itself, which is exactly how you should approach it.
