Little Oaks

Little Oaks is a proper woodland walk just outside Leicester, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. You're walking through mature oak woodland with decent paths, decent light filtering through, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by trees. The forest floor stays relatively dry even after rain, which is more than can be said for some Midlands woods.

This is ideal for families wanting an hour or two in the trees without driving hours away from the city. Kids can run ahead on the main paths, and there's enough variation to keep them engaged - small clearings, the odd fallen log to clamber over, birdsong if you're lucky and quiet enough. Dog walkers get a proper go here too. Don't expect dramatic vistas or ancient heritage sites; this is straightforward, accessible woodland.

Stay around two hours maximum unless you're very keen on the local flora. The paths are well-marked enough that you won't get lost, though a map helps if you want to explore the full circuit. Admission appears free and there's parking, though facilities are basic.

If you're staying at Charnwood Acres or Proctors Park for a caravan holiday, Little Oaks works well as a morning or afternoon break without being a major detour. It's the kind of place that fills an hour nicely between bigger attractions, rather than a destination in itself. Bring proper walking boots - the ground can be muddy in patches.
