Little Murston Nature Reserve

A few miles inland from Sheerness sits Little Murston Nature Reserve, a proper slice of Kent marshland that punches above its weight for birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet walk away from the seaside crowds. The reserve is basically a stretch of grazing marsh and reed beds where you can expect to spot waders, wildfowl, and if you're lucky, some rarer migrants depending on the season. There's a viewing area that gives decent sightlines across the wetland without you having to trudge through mud up to your knees.

It's genuinely worth an hour or so if you've got binoculars and a bit of patience. Kids might find it slow-going unless they're already into wildlife spotting - there's not much in the way of interactive stuff, just landscape and birds. Spring and autumn tend to be the best times when migration's happening and the variety picks up.

The reserve appears to be free and accessible, though there's no formal visitor centre, so go in without expecting facilities or a café. It works well as a half-day addition to a park-based holiday from Sheerness Holiday Park or Ashcroft Coast Holiday Park rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at one of the nearby sites and the weather's decent, it's a solid excuse to get off the caravan site and stretch your legs. Just bring proper footwear - it can get boggy - and don't expect crowds or anything fancy.
