Little Eycott Hill

Little Eycott Hill sits just outside Penrith, a proper Lake District fell that won't exhaust you but delivers genuine views. The walk up takes around 45 minutes depending on your fitness, climbing to 1,050 metres across open moorland with those wide-angle vistas Lake District walkers crave - Blencathra, Helvellyn, and the Pennines all visible on a clear day.

It's not a slog. The path is generally well-trodden, though bog patches appear after wet weather, so decent boots matter. You'll pass through rough grassland rather than forest, which means views build as you climb instead of revealing themselves suddenly at the top. That's actually better.

Families with teenagers will manage fine. Younger kids might flag on the descent - it's steeper coming down than going up. Experienced walkers often bag it as part of a longer traverse taking in neighboring peaks, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with making it a standalone trip. Allow two hours return with a break at the summit.

Based near Penrith, you've got several camping options within 5 kilometres - Beckses, Troutbeck Head, and Threlkeld Hall are your closest bets if you're planning a longer stay. Pack a flask. The wind up top can bite even when it's mild lower down, and there's no shelter whatsoever.

Worth doing? Yes. Game-changing? No. It's a solid morning or afternoon walk that sits perfectly between a training hike and something actually demanding. Go if you're in the area, but don't reroute your holiday specifically for it.
