Aira Force

A cascade of white water tumbling down a steep fell-side - that's Aira Force, and it's one of the Lake District's most satisfying waterfall walks. You'll find it near Penrith, tucked into the eastern slopes above Ullswater, and it's worth the drive from town.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. You park up and head into the woodland, following Aira Beck as it winds uphill. The path climbs maybe 400 feet or so, which is proper manageable for most people but will get the legs working. The waterfall itself drops about 65 feet in a single leap - impressive when the water's running high after rain, though it can look a bit thin in summer.

It's a cracking spot for families who want a real walk without committing to hours on the fells. Kids tend to love scrambling about the rocks at the base, and the woodland canopy keeps things cool. Walkers heading for longer routes can push on upwards to High Force if they fancy it. Allow an hour return trip if you're just after the main waterfall, longer if you explore properly.

Free to visit and open year-round, though conditions underfoot get slippery when wet - which they often are in Cumbria. The nearest holiday parks cluster within a few miles: Ullswater Holiday Park is closest at 2.7 miles, with Troutbeck Head Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just slightly further. It combines well with a broader Ullswater loop if you're basing yourself at one of the parks nearby.
