Little Earl

Little Earl sits just outside Stirling in the Scottish Lowlands, offering a surprisingly rewarding walk for the effort required. It's not a major peak by any measure - more of a distinctive hill with decent views across the surrounding countryside and towards the Trossachs if conditions allow. The walk itself takes a couple of hours return from the nearest access point, tracking through moorland and rough grass. Most people manage it fine, though the ground can be boggy depending on recent rainfall.

This is proper walking terrain rather than a tourist tick-box. You won't find a cafe at the summit or any facilities, so bring water and something to eat. The view rewards you more for effort invested than for the actual height gain - there's something satisfying about being alone up there when the weather plays ball. Families with older kids who enjoy hiking will get genuine enjoyment from it, especially if they're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Endrick Escape or Duncan Family Farms. The proximity to Glasgow makes it accessible for a day trip, though you're better off staying locally if you want to tackle it properly.

Timing matters here. Autumn and spring offer the clearest skies; summer can bring midges that make standing still unpleasant. Allow a full afternoon if you're not a rushed walker. The surrounding area has better-known peaks if Little Earl doesn't appeal, but if you want something less crowded than the obvious Lowland hikes, this delivers. Worth the detour if you're already in Stirling.
