Little Doward Iron Age Hill Fort

The ramparts are still there, two thousand years on. Little Doward sits on a ridge above Ross-on-Wye, a proper Iron Age fort with defensive ditches you can actually walk through - not just read about in a museum. It's a straightforward hilltop job: earthwork defences forming an oval enclosure, the kind of place where someone once stood watch over the Wye Valley.

This is one for walkers and history types rather than families after a theme park afternoon. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards. You get the landscape, the views, and your own imagination filling in what happened here around 500 BC. Allow a good hour if you're coming from Ross-on-Wye and want to properly explore the site and take in the surrounding countryside.

It's free to visit - there's no gate, no entrance fee. The walk itself is decent without being punishing, the kind of thing you'd do en route to somewhere else or as a morning outing from Doward Park Campsite, which sits barely half a mile away. Pair it with a wander along the Wye Valley Walk if the weather's decent. Spring and autumn are lovely; summer can get overgrown. Winter's actually fine for seeing the earthworks clearly.

Worth the trip? If you're already camping locally and enjoy a bit of Iron Age archaeology, absolutely. It's not a day-out destination on its own, but it's the sort of spot that makes sense in a week exploring the Wye Valley properly.
