Little Douk Cave

You'll find Little Douk Cave tucked away in the limestone country near Carnforth, a modest but genuine bit of Yorkshire's underworld that rewards a proper scramble to reach it. It's not a show cave with fairy lights and a gift shop - this is the real thing, a natural fissure that demands a bit of scrambling and a torch if you want to see what's in there. The entrance is tight, almost secretive, and the passage opens into a decent chamber once your eyes adjust to the gloom.

This is squarely for cave enthusiasts and walkers rather than casual tourists. If you're expecting Wookey Hole or Mother Shipton's, you'll be disappointed. But if you like the idea of clambering through actual limestone karst without queuing or paying admission, Little Douk delivers. Twenty minutes inside feels about right before the novelty of cold stone walls and low ceilings wears thin.

Wear proper boots - it's damp and muddy underfoot, and the rock is slippery. Go during daylight hours because the approach walk through fields can be awkward in the dark. There's no cafe or facilities, so bring water.
