Little Carr

Little Carr is a proper little woodland tucked away near Horncastle - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a small forest, nothing vast, but that's rather the point. The trees are dense enough to feel properly enclosed, and the paths wind through with that slightly overgrown, genuine feel that means it hasn't been manicured to within an inch of its life.

You get woodland walks here, straightforward stuff on decent enough ground underfoot. It's the kind of spot where families with younger kids can let them run about without worrying they'll vanish for hours, and dog walkers absolutely love it - plenty of space, plenty of shade. History buffs might find it interesting as ancient woodland, though there's not a great deal of signage explaining what you're looking at.

Allow a good hour to explore properly without rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to sit on a fallen log for a bit. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water if you're planning to stay a while. Best visited outside peak school holidays when it's quieter.

If you're staying at Lincolnshire Glamping or Oxcombe Campsite nearby, Little Carr works as a morning wander before heading elsewhere - it doesn't demand a full day, but it's worth the short drive from either camp. The woodland itself is free to access, which is always welcome when you're on a budget.
