Lismore Parish Church (Formerly St Moluag's Cathedral)

The grey stone building sits quietly on Lismore Island, facing out towards the Sound of Mull. This is Lismore Parish Church, though locals still call it St Moluag's Cathedral - a name that sticks because of what the place genuinely is: a 13th-century cathedral that got demoted to parish church status centuries ago, yet somehow feels no smaller for it.

Walking in, you notice the bones of the medieval structure first. High stone arches, a proper chancel, windows that let light fall across worn floors in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. There's a modern east window alongside the ancient masonry, which jars only slightly. The interior is sparse but not empty - that particular Scottish Protestant restraint that somehow makes a building feel more thoughtful rather than less.

It's worth the ferry trip from Oban if you're already island-hopping, though not a reason alone to make the journey. History types and photographers will find something genuine here - no interpretation boards, no gift shop, just an actual working church that happens to have been important once. Twenty minutes inside is enough, though the walk around the island itself extends the visit considerably.

Stay at Tralee Bay Holidays or Seaview Caravan Park back on the mainland near Oban, both excellent, and treat this as a morning excursion between longer Argyll explorations. The island ferry runs regular services, and admission is free - you're walking into someone's place of worship, so the usual courtesies apply.
