Lings Plantation

Walk into Lings Plantation and you're instantly in proper woodland - the kind where tall conifers block out most of the sky and the ground is soft underfoot. It's a straightforward forest near Beverley, nothing fancy, just dense trees and quiet paths that meander through without much fanfare.

For walkers this is bread and butter stuff. You get a decent stretch of legs without needing proper hiking boots or a map. The woodland offers shelter when it's windy and some respite from the sun on hot days. Children will enjoy the simple task of following paths and spotting whatever wildlife decides to show itself - squirrels are usually about. History buffs won't find much to chew on here; it's primarily a working plantation rather than a heritage site.

How long to allow depends entirely on your pace. A quick loop takes forty minutes. If you're properly moseying and stopping to look about, you can stretch it to ninety minutes. There's no entrance fee or facilities that I can find - this is just a place you turn up and walk.

If you're based at Cherry Burton Leisure Park nearby, Lings works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself, more a solid addition to a wider day exploring the Beverley area. William's Den, the higher-rated park five miles south, is perhaps better positioned if you want woodland walks plus family facilities, though Lings remains a proper, unpretentious spot for anyone wanting quiet forest time.
