Lingmell End

The walk up Lingmell End from Wasdale Head is proper fell-walking territory - nothing tame about it. You're looking at a steep, rough ascent that rewards the effort with views across to Scafell Pike and down into one of England's wildest valleys. Most walkers tackle it as part of a longer Wasdale circuit rather than a standalone trip, which makes sense given the terrain.

It's not a peak for casual strollers. The path is relentless, loose scree in places, and the weather can turn foul in minutes. That said, once you're up there, you've genuinely earned it. The vistas are worth every aching leg - Lingmell Col sits between you and Scafell Pike proper, and the drop down to Wastwater is dramatic in the best possible way.

You'll want proper boots and at least three to four hours for a round trip from the valley. It's the sort of walk that appeals to fell runners and serious hikers more than families or day-trippers from Penrith. Winter conditions make it significantly harder.

If you're staying at one of the Lake District holiday parks - Sykeside or Lakeside Retreat Glamping are closest at three to five miles out - Wasdale makes a cracking day out. You could easily combine this with Scafell Pike for a proper fell expedition, though that's genuinely full-day territory. The car park at Wasdale Head fills up by mid-morning on weekends, so get there early.
