Linear Park

A long strip of woodland and open ground following an old railway line - that's Linear Park in a nutshell. It runs through the Forest of Dean area near Mitcheldean and gives you a proper straightforward walk without the faffing about. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, which means it's genuinely accessible for families with buggies and older walkers who don't fancy scrambling up hillsides.

What you actually get is a corridor of trees and field margins where you might spot deer, buzzards, or just enjoy the fact that you're moving through actual countryside without tackling anything steep. It's the kind of place where you can switch off - no views to ooh and aah over, just honest walking. Bring the kids if they're at an age where they'll just plod along; bored teenagers will drag their feet.

The beauty of Linear Park is how it slots into a broader Forest of Dean trip. You've got Passage Farm Caravan & Campsite and West End Farm just down the road if you're based nearby, or any number of other sites within spitting distance - The Roost Retreats is only 2.8 miles away. Use it as one leg of a longer day out rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a proper Forest walk or a visit to one of the visitor centres and you've got something solid.

Timing-wise, allow 90 minutes to two hours for a decent stretch without rushing. Go early if you want peace, or midweek if weekends feel too busy. No special kit needed - just sensible shoes and weather-appropriate layers.
