Chestnuts Hill

Standing at 358 metres, this Forest of Dean summit delivers surprisingly expansive views across the Wye Valley and into Wales on clear days. The climb up through mixed woodland takes about 45 minutes from the nearest car park, following well-marked footpaths that can get muddy after rain. Worth bringing proper walking boots.

Families with older children will enjoy the steady ascent, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. The reward is a proper sense of achievement and those sweeping vistas that photographers love in golden hour light.

From Mitcheldean, it's a short drive to the trailhead, making it an excellent day out from any of the nearby campsites. The Roost Retreats sits closest at just 1.7 miles away, while Passage Farm Caravan & Campsite offers another convenient base for exploring this corner of Gloucestershire.

Best tackled in dry weather when the paths aren't slippery underfoot. Allow half a day including the walk there and back, plus time to catch your breath at the summit. It's free to climb, naturally, and the Forest of Dean's network of paths means you can easily combine it with other walks in the area.
