Lindbury Camp

Getting to Lindbury Camp means heading out from Marlborough across the chalky downs - it's an Iron Age hillfort that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. The earthworks are still there, a proper bit of archaeology you can walk around rather than gawk at through a fence. You'll see the defensive ditches and ramparts that would have impressed people two thousand years ago, though these days they're softened by grass and the march of time.

This is absolutely one for the history-minded walker rather than anyone expecting visitor facilities or interpretation boards. There's something quite good about that - you're using your imagination a bit, thinking about why Iron Age settlers chose this particular hilltop and what they were defending against. The views across Wiltshire from up here are decent enough, and it's a proper leg-stretcher on the downs if you're staying locally.

Allow an hour or so, depending on how much you want to potter about. Free to visit, naturally - it's just open countryside. Best tackled on a dry day when the ground isn't churned mud, and bring a map or phone navigation because signage is minimal. The nearest decent base would be Totteridge Farm Camping Pods just five miles away, or Hillview Park if you prefer conventional pitches. Either location makes Lindbury a worthwhile afternoon detour between other Wiltshire attractions.
