Limekilns

The limekilns at Boddin Point are basically a row of stone relics sat right on the Aberdeenshire coast near Arbroath, waiting for someone to actually look at them properly. You're staring at industrial archaeology - proper Victorian-era kilns that once burned limestone to make lime for mortar and fertiliser. The structures themselves are squat, sturdy things, weathered by a good century or more of Scottish coastal battering.

What makes them worth the trip is the setting. The walk down to them takes you through rough grassland with the North Sea churning away below. The kilns sit against dramatic red cliffs, and on a clear day the light catches the stone in ways that make you understand why this was such a key industry. You'll spend maybe forty minutes here if you're genuinely interested in industrial history - longer if you're photographing the landscape.

History enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids will find it interesting for about fifteen minutes unless they're the type who get excited about engineering. Walkers should definitely include it as part of a longer coastal ramble rather than visit it in isolation.

Admission appears to be free, though there's not much in the way of facilities on site. It's the kind of place you'd combine with The Grange Glamping just down the road if you're staying in the area - gives you something genuine to do on a quiet afternoon rather than another shopping trip to Arbroath.
