Lime Hole Plantation

The woodland walk through Lime Hole Plantation, just outside Loughborough, won't take long but it's worth half an hour if you're staying nearby. This small forest sits in a gentle valley where old lime workings have been gradually reclaimed by trees - you can still spot the shallow depressions in the ground where the extraction happened decades ago. The path winds through mixed woodland with enough mature trees to feel properly green and quiet, even on busy weekends.

It's ideal for a quick leg-stretch rather than a full day out. Dog walkers will appreciate it, and families with primary-aged kids won't find it demanding, though there's not much to excite them once they've clambered about the banks a couple of times. History enthusiasts might enjoy spotting the old quarry features if they know what to look for.

The walk works well as a morning activity if you're based at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping, both within a few miles. Pair it with something bigger - Frisby Lakes Lodge Park is a bit further out but gives you more scope for a proper day. No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Sunrise visits feel best here, when the light filters through the canopy properly. Nothing spectacular, but on a decent morning it's exactly the sort of woodland walk that makes a caravan park weekend feel less like you're stuck in one spot.
