Icehouse Plantation

Walking into Icehouse Plantation feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - proper quiet, with ancient trees creating a cathedral-like canopy overhead. It's a working forest near Loughborough, named after the ice houses that were once dug into the ground here to preserve ice cut from frozen ponds. You won't find much interpretation or tourist infrastructure, which is either refreshing or frustrating depending on what you want.

The woodland itself is the draw. There are decent walking paths threading through mature broadleaf trees, and it's the sort of place where you might actually hear birdsong instead of other visitors. The forest floor changes seasonally - bluebells in spring, thick leaf cover in autumn - and it's genuinely lovely for a two-hour wander. Families with older kids will manage fine; the paths aren't demanding, though they can be muddy after rain.

This isn't a destination attraction with facilities or cafe stops. Think of it as an add-on to a longer stay in the area rather than a main event. If you're based at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping - both within five miles - it's an easy morning's walk that breaks up park life without requiring a big plan. Go early on a weekday if you can; weekends see more footfall. The nearest proper town infrastructure is Loughborough, so stock up there before you visit. Admission appears free, which is the only thing pushing it above ordinary.
