Lightwater Tarns Country Park

The tarns themselves are the real draw here - three glacial pools set into the fells with proper fell-side views that don't require a six-hour hike to reach. You're looking at a straightforward walk, maybe an hour round trip depending on which paths you take, and the reward is genuinely decent: the water reflects the surrounding slopes, and on a clear day you get sight lines back toward the main valley.

It works best for people who want a bit of fell walking without committing to a full day expedition. Families with older kids will manage it fine; those with buggies might struggle on the rougher sections. The tarns aren't dramatically remote or dramatic in the way the bigger Cumbrian lakes are, but they've got a quieter appeal that means you're unlikely to be queuing for photos alongside fifty other visitors.

If you're camped at Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the Windermere site a few miles south, this slots in nicely as a half-day option between longer park-based explorations. The nearest town is Kendal itself - base yourself there and the tarns make a manageable morning walk if the weather turns temperamental elsewhere.

Bring decent boots. The paths can be boggy after rain, which is most of the time in Cumbria. Worth the drive? If you're already in the area, absolutely. As a standalone trip from further afield, probably not.
