Lidgate Orchard

The orchards around Lidgate sit tucked in gentle Cambridgeshire countryside just outside Bury Saint Edmunds, and they're proper worth seeking out if you're after something quieter than the usual nature reserve circuit. This is old-school Norfolk and Suffolk farmland - rows of apple and pear trees, rough grassland, and the kind of peace you genuinely can't find near town. The reserve itself is small enough to walk in an hour, but the sort of place where you'll linger longer than expected because the light's nice or you've spotted something in the hedgerow.

It's best for walkers who don't need constant signposting or facilities. Serious twitchers come here for migrant birds in spring and autumn, when the orchard becomes a pit stop for exhausted travellers heading north or south. Summer's quieter but lovely if the weather's decent - though expect mud in winter, which is half the charm if you're that way inclined. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited; there's not much to actually do, just fields and trees to wander through.

The nearest town is Bury Saint Edmunds, which has proper facilities if you need them. If you're staying at Piggles Retreat nearby, this makes a good morning walk before heading to bigger attractions elsewhere. It's free to access, which is rare enough that it's worth the detour. Allow a couple of hours maximum, though don't come expecting manicured paths or interpretation boards - this is working countryside, not a visitor centre.
