Liddington Hill

The walk up Liddington Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Wiltshire plains for miles. On a clear day you can pick out the Vale of White Horse away to the north, and the countryside rolls away in every direction with that soft, rolling quality that makes the South West so appealing.

It's a proper hill rather than a mountain, so don't expect a gruelling slog. The climb takes maybe thirty to forty minutes depending on fitness, and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost. The summit itself has an Iron Age fort - the earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at, though there's nothing dramatic standing there now. What matters more is the 360-degree panorama and the chance to stand at the top and actually feel the landscape breathe around you.

The nearest base is Botswicky Copse, just over three miles away. If you're staying at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky, this makes a cracking morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of place that works for anyone really - walkers will appreciate the views, families with older kids won't find it too demanding, and if you're interested in Iron Age archaeology it's worth spending an hour reading up beforehand so you can actually spot the fort.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you can. The midday light is often a bit flat. And bring a proper windproof - even in summer there's nothing between you and the elements up there.
