Lexden Mount

A lumpy grass mound on the edge of Colchester might not sound thrilling, but Lexden Mount is genuinely worth a quick detour if you're camping nearby. This is a proper Iron Age fortification - a defensive earthwork that once guarded a settlement around 2,000 years ago. The mound itself stands maybe 20 feet high, which isn't dramatic, but the scale becomes clear when you're standing on top of it.

It's the kind of site that works best if you're already interested in archaeology or Roman history. Kids might find it dull unless they're the type who like clambering on ancient things. The walk up takes five minutes, and you get a decent view across the Essex countryside. There's no visitor infrastructure - no interpretive signs, no cafe, nothing - so you're essentially looking at a grassy bump with a bit of historical significance attached.

Free to access and no set opening hours, which means you can visit whenever. Best to go after rain when the grass has dried out, as it can get genuinely muddy. It's just east of Colchester town centre, so if you're staying at Colchester Country Park or Swallows Field Glamping Pods, it's a straightforward short drive or even a walk if you're keen. Pair it with a proper look around Colchester itself - the Roman walls and castle museum will give you much better context for what you're seeing here. On its own, Lexden Mount is more of a "while we're in the area" stop than a reason to visit Essex, but that's not necessarily a criticism.
