Levin Down is a Sussex Wildlife Trust reserve that operates on the assumption you'll work for your views, and that's rather the point. You're walking through restored downland where sheep keep the grass in check and orchids burst through in early summer. Historically, these Sussex downs were grazed into this state centuries ago, then largely abandoned until the trust stepped in. Now it's one of the better patches of chalk grassland left in the south-east - the sort of place where chalk-loving plants thrive and you might spot a buzzard working the slopes. The reserve sits about four miles south-west of Chichester, which makes it a solid half-day walk rather than a quick tick-off.

Walkers will get the most from this. Children with stamina will enjoy it; small ones will find the open terrain a bit exposed and dull. Allow two to three hours to properly explore the ridge paths without rushing. The best wildflower show runs May through July. It's free, as trust reserves are, and there's parking near the entrance.
