Leverhulme Park

The woodland here feels properly remote despite being barely four miles from Bury town centre. Leverhulme Park is a sprawling nature reserve that spreads across 154 acres of Lancashire countryside - old industrial land transformed into something genuinely worth exploring on foot.

You'll find yourself walking through mixed woodland, past open grassland, and along the river valley. The paths are well-trodden but not overcrowded. Birdwatchers get a fair bit out of the place - woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional sparrowhawk if you're lucky. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and the sheer space to run around without worrying about getting lost.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, though you could easily stretch it to half a day if you're the type to sit still and listen. The whole place has that recovering-from-industry feel that's become quite common in this part of Lancashire - there's something oddly satisfying about it.

It slots nicely into a park holiday based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which sits just down the valley. Spring and early summer are the best times to visit - the woodland flowers come alive and the birdsong is relentless in the best possible way. Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities that we're aware of, so bring what you need.
