Lenthay Common

The open heathland around Lenthay Common rolls out like something from a Victorian landscape painting, though without the crowds you'd expect at a proper tourist trap. It's proper Dorset - all gorse bushes, sandy paths and the occasional bewildered rabbit. You won't find gift shops or visitor centres here, just the land itself, which is rather the point.

Walkers get the most from it, particularly those heading out from Yeovil way who fancy stretching their legs without committing to a full day's hike. The terrain's gentle enough for families with kids who can manage a decent stride, though toddlers might find the uneven ground tedious after twenty minutes. The heath opens up nicely in late summer when the gorse is in bloom - a proper blaze of yellow if you time it right. Spring's muddy and autumn's moody in the best possible way.

There's nothing to pay and no set hours because there's no infrastructure to speak of. Just turn up, park sensibly where you find space, and get walking. Allow an hour for a decent circuit, more if you're the type who stops to look at things.

It's the sort of place that makes sense as a break between longer walks in the area, or a quick leg-stretch if you're based at Starlight Glamping up the road. Not a destination in itself, but exactly the kind of honest, unpretentious Dorset countryside that reminds you why you came in the first place.
