Standing at 704 metres, this granite dome offers one of the finest viewpoints in the Mourne Mountains without the crowds that flock to Slieve Donard. The climb from Castlewellan Forest Park takes about two hours through well-marked woodland paths before opening onto moorland. Once you clear the treeline, the views across County Down are absolutely cracking.

Experienced walkers will appreciate the straightforward route, though the final approach involves a bit of scrambling over granite slabs. Families with older children (say 12 plus) should manage fine, but it's not suitable for pushchairs or anyone uncomfortable with steep terrain. The summit rewards you with panoramas stretching from the Irish Sea to the heart of the Mournes.

Go early to avoid weekend crowds and catch the best light for photographs. Allow four hours round trip from the forest park car park, longer if you fancy a proper lunch break at the top. Weather changes quickly up here, so pack layers even on sunny days.

This peak works brilliantly as a day out from any of the nearby campsites around Castlewellan. Tollymore Campsite and the various glamping spots within a few miles make ideal bases for exploring the wider Mourne range. After the descent, Castlewellan's cafes provide the perfect spot for a well-earned cup of tea.
