Ballyward Lake

The water at Ballyward is so still on a clear morning that you'd swear it was glass. It's a modest lake sitting on the edge of Castlewellan, ringed by trees and the distant bulk of the Mourne Mountains - the kind of place locals know well but visitors often overlook.

This is proper walking territory. The lakeside path is flat and easy, taking about an hour to do the circuit without rushing. Families with younger children will manage it fine, and it's exactly the sort of low-key spot where you can let them run about without worrying. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited here - herons, mallards, the lot. If you're after dramatic views and Instagram moments, look elsewhere. But if you want somewhere to clear your head and actually hear yourself think, it delivers.

There's a car park near the entrance and it costs nothing, which is refreshing. Best come early to beat any weekend crowds, or honestly, on a weekday morning when you'll practically have it to yourself. Allow two hours if you're not in a hurry.

It slots nicely into a park-based holiday centred on Castlewellan - Tollymore Campsite and Camping Tollymore Forest Park are both within six kilometres, and you could easily do this lake walk as a gentler day between hikes into the Mournes. Slieve Croob Camping's even closer at 4.6 miles. Not a destination in itself, but a proper local's break from the bigger attractions.
