The walk up Carrivmoragh rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb feel properly worth it. This modest peak sits just inland from Castlewellan, close enough for an afternoon venture but far enough away from the busier Mourne slopes to feel less crowded. The summit itself isn't dramatic - you're looking at roughly 500 metres of elevation - but the payoff is genuine: clear days give you sweeping views across County Down, with the Mourne Mountains forming a proper backdrop to the east.

It's a walker's hill, this one. The approach isn't technical, but it does require reasonable fitness and proper boots, especially if the ground's been wet. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip from Castlewellan, depending on fitness and whether you're stopping to admire the views every few minutes, which you will be.

Families with young children might find it a bit much - there's exposure on the higher sections and no safety railings. But teenagers who can manage a sustained climb will love it, particularly on clear days when you can see right across to the coast near Downpatrick.

The hill draws walkers, and parking near the trailhead gets tight by mid-morning.
