Leicester Forest East Spinney

A sliver of ancient woodland just east of Leicester, Leicester Forest East Spinney is the kind of place locals know and outsiders miss. The reserve protects a pocket of native broadleaf forest - oak, ash, and hazel mostly - that's been here far longer than the suburbs that now crowd its edges.

Walking the footpaths here feels properly quiet, even though you're minutes from the city. The ground is soft with leaf litter, and in spring the woodland floor erupts with bluebells. Birdwatchers come for the nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers. It's manageable in an hour or two, nothing strenuous, just a gentle meander through what's left of the old Charnwood Forest.

This works best for families after a stretch of legs or anyone keen on woodland birds - take binoculars. Don't expect dramatic vistas or formal facilities. It's unvarnished nature, which is precisely the point.

If you're based at Charnwood Acres or The Paddocks, both within four miles, the Spinney makes a fine morning outing before heading into Leicester proper. It's free and accessible, though there's no visitor centre or car park to speak of, so do check access before you visit. September to November is cracking - the woodland smells like autumn should, and you've got proper elbow room. The reserve is quiet enough that you'll actually hear the birds.
