Leadbeater Dam

The water here is still and dark, surrounded by moorland that rolls away toward the Pennines. Leadbeater Dam sits just outside Keighley, a proper working reservoir that's been catching runoff from the hills since Victorian times. You won't find theme parks or visitor centres - this is just a dam doing its job, and that's rather the point.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers and landscape photographers more than families after a day out. The walk around the perimeter is straightforward enough, and on clear days the views across the water toward the surrounding peaks are worth the trip. Come early if you want solitude; the light in late afternoon can be striking, especially when rain's just cleared off the moor.

There's no admission charge and no set hours - you're free to wander whenever suits. An hour will see you round it comfortably, though you could stretch it to two if you're taking your time with photos. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Upwood is closest at under four miles - it makes for an easy morning ramble before heading down to Keighley itself for lunch.

The dam works best as part of a broader moorland exploration rather than a destination in itself. It's not dramatic like Ullswater or Windermere, but if you want a taste of reservoir Yorkshire without the crowds, it'll do you fine.
