Leach Tarn

A small lake tucked into the fells above Grange-over-Sands, Leach Tarn sits at around 800 metres and makes for a proper rewarding walk if you're staying in the area. The water itself is dark and moody, ringed by heather and rough grassland rather than the manicured woodland you get lower down - it feels wilder than you'd expect just a few miles from the coast.

This isn't a destination in itself. It's a walk. Most people come up from the Grange side or loop it as part of a broader fell walk across Scout Scar or down towards the limestone country around Arnside. Allow a couple of hours return from Grange if you're making an afternoon of it. The path is clear but steep in sections - it's moorland walking rather than a ramble, and the wind can be fresh up there even on a calm day below.

Families with young kids might find the initial climb tedious. Walkers after mountain views will get them - Morecambe Bay opens up behind you, and on a clear day you're looking across proper distance. It's free, obviously, being fell country.

If you're camped at Old Park Wood just outside Grange, this sits perfectly as a half-day excursion. Pair it with the limestone walks around Arnside or a wander through Arnside Knott, and you've got a solid few days of footwork. Don't come expecting facilities or drama - it's water, moorland, and views.
