Leacann nan Gall

The walk up Leacann nan Gall from Dunoon takes you inland away from the Clyde's tourist shuffle and into proper hill country. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards, but the ascent rewards you with views across to Arran and the Kyles of Bute - exactly the sort of thing that makes you understand why people bother living this far north. The route itself is straightforward enough for most walkers, though it's steep in places and the ground can be boggy after rain. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you're moving with kids. This is walker territory, not a casual stroll, so trainers with grip matter.

Dunoon sits right below you when you reach the top, which gives the whole outing an oddly intimate feel. You're never far from civilisation, yet the hill manages to feel removed from the holiday-park bustle. The Secret Glen Campsite and Hunters Quay Holiday Village are both within a few miles, making this an easy add-on if you're staying in one of those places. It's the sort of walk that justifies a week in Argyll rather than a day trip - something to do between loch days and wet-weather visits to Dunoon itself. Bring a weather eye though; the summit gets cloud fast, and when it does you've lost half the appeal. Go early and you might just time it right.
