Lea Wood

Dense woodland with proper ancient oak and birch trees - the sort of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you lose track of time. Lea Wood sits just outside Ellesmere and feels genuinely remote despite being accessible enough for a decent afternoon walk.

It's a straightforward forest ramble rather than a managed visitor attraction. You're following footpaths through quiet woodland, listening for birds, spotting the occasional deer if you're lucky. The paths are well-trodden but you won't find benches or interpretation boards here. That's rather the point - it's the real thing, not a polished experience.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain's gentle enough for families who don't mind their kids getting a bit muddy, though it's not pushing any boundaries in terms of scenery or drama. If you're expecting rolling vistas or dramatic clearings, you'll be disappointed. This is intimate woodland walking - the kind where you notice the detail rather than the spectacle.

About an hour or so gives you a solid loop without overcommitting. Spring's cracking if you're after woodland flowers and birdsong; autumn's golden and quiet. Winter can be sodden underfoot.

If you're based at Abbey Green Farm just up the road, Lea Wood slots in nicely as a morning or early evening wander - nothing taxing, just enough to stretch your legs and clear your head before heading back for a cup of tea.
