Lea Wood

Walk into Lea Wood and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy actually blocks out the sky and you can hear yourself think. It's a straightforward forest experience near Fairford, nothing pretentious about it, just trees, paths, and the occasional flash of wildlife if you're lucky enough.

The wood works well for a half-day outing when you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. Great Farm is only 2.7 miles away, which makes this a realistic leg-stretch option rather than a major expedition. You can knock out a decent walk in two to three hours depending on which routes you take, though the paths aren't particularly well-marked so don't expect waymarked trails. It's the sort of place where you wander, double back, and generally potter about.

Families with younger kids might find it adequate for an hour or so before restlessness sets in - there's no play equipment or facilities to speak of. Walkers and anyone after a quiet break from caravan life will appreciate it far more. The whole thing is free, which is the saving grace if it turns out not to be your cup of tea.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best when the undergrowth doesn't make navigation a nightmare. Winter can be muddy and cramped underfoot. It's not the headline attraction of the Cotswolds, but as an add-on to a park stay near Fairford, particularly if you're at Burford Caravan Club 6.4 miles south, it's worth thirty minutes of your time.
