Lawsons Clump

A stand of Scots pine and heathland tucked between Poole and Wareham, Lawsons Clump is one of those quiet corners that rewards a short detour without demanding much commitment. The reserve sits on acid heathland typical of this part of Dorset - open, wind-swept, with low scrub and the kind of views that feel a bit wilder than you'd expect so close to town.

There's not much here in terms of facilities or formal attractions, which is rather the point. You'll find walking paths that let you loop through different habitat types, spotting heather, gorse, and if you're lucky, some of the heath's resident birds and reptiles. It's genuinely lovely for a thirty-minute ramble, the sort of walk that clears your head without requiring proper hiking boots.

Families with young children might find it a bit limited - there's no playground or visitor centre - but older kids keen on wildlife or who need to burn off some energy will manage fine. It's the kind of place that appeals to people who actually like walking rather than those after a curated attraction.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandford or Hunter's Moon just down the road, or camping somewhere in the Wareham Forest cluster, this makes a sensible half-hour diversion. Free to visit, open whenever, no booking needed. Go early morning if you want the best chance of spotting wildlife. The trade-off is that there's minimal infrastructure - bring your own water.
