Great Ovens Hill

Standing at just 141 metres, Great Ovens Hill won't challenge any serious fell walkers, but it delivers proper views across Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills beyond. The climb from the Wareham Forest car park takes about twenty minutes on a well-marked path through heathland that turns purple with heather come late summer.

Families with older children will find this an easy win - steep enough to feel like an achievement but short enough that nobody gets properly knackered. The summit itself is a bit scruffy, more working hill than scenic viewpoint, but on a clear day you can pick out Brownsea Island and the Jurassic Coast stretching towards Swanage.

What makes this worth the effort is how it fits into a day exploring the area around Wareham. The forest trails below offer mountain biking and longer walks, while Poole itself is only fifteen minutes by car for proper seaside fun. It's free to access and there's decent parking, though it can get busy on summer weekends.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Wareham Forest Tourist Park or Haven Rockley Park puts you right on the doorstep. The hill makes a good morning stretch-the-legs mission before heading to Bournemouth's beaches or exploring the ruins at Corfe Castle.
