The Latchgate Gallery sits quietly in Beverley, a town that punches well above its weight for art. This isn't some sprawling contemporary space with installations that make you squint - it's a proper working gallery where you genuinely bump into artists and can actually have a conversation about the work on the walls.

What you get here depends entirely on what's showing, but the gallery tends toward accessible contemporary craft and painting rather than the intimidating stuff. We saw textiles that made us stop and properly look, alongside some decent landscape work that felt genuine rather than knocked out for the tourist market. The space itself is compact enough that you won't need more than forty minutes unless you're genuinely invested in chatting with whoever's around.

This works best for people who actually like art without needing the big institutional theatre of it all. Families with older kids won't hate it, though under-tens will probably lose interest quickly. Walkers passing through Beverley on their way between somewhere more famous will find it worth a twenty-minute detour.

Free entry or a small donation - it's the sort of place where you feel you should leave something - and there's no pressure either way. Pop in before heading to Manor Farm Camping if you're staying in the area, though Beverley itself has enough pubs and decent restaurants to make it worth an afternoon regardless. The town's medieval core is genuinely pleasing to walk around.
