Lapwing Hall Lake

A shallow lake ringed by woodland on the edge of Macclesfield, Lapwing Hall Lake is the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's not dramatic or particularly large, but there's something quietly appealing about it - the water's still most days, reflecting the trees, and you'll spot the odd fisherman set up for the afternoon.

The walk round takes maybe forty minutes at a gentle pace. Paths are decent enough, though they get muddy after rain and parts can be a touch overgrown depending on the season. It's flat and easy, which makes it popular with families and anyone after a straightforward stroll rather than something demanding. Bird watchers do well here - lapwings are the main attraction, naturally, though you'll see mallards, coots and the occasional heron.

There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. Bring what you need. Admission appears to be free, and there's no obvious opening hours restriction, though I'd avoid showing up at dusk.

If you're based at Royal Vale Caravan Park or Woodlands Park Cheshire nearby, this works as an easy half-day outing, especially if you've got restless kids who need a walk but not an all-day expedition. On its own it's not worth a special journey from further afield, but paired with Macclesfield town centre or a wider ramble round the area, it fills a gap nicely. Go when the light's good - that's when the reflections work and the birds are most active.
