Laphroaig Distillery

The smell hits you before you even step inside - that unmistakable peat smoke that Laphroaig is famous for. It's intense, medicinal, a bit like licking a bonfire, and you'll either love it or wonder what on earth people are paying good money for. The distillery sits right on the shores of Loch Laphroaig on Islay, and the whole operation feels properly no-nonsense. This isn't some polished visitor centre trying to be trendy; it's a working distillery where they're genuinely making whisky, not theatre.

The tours take you through the malting floors where the barley gets smoked over peat fires, then the stills where the magic happens. You'll see the copper pot stills gleaming and hear the story of how they source their peat from the local bogs. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full experience with a tasting. The standard tour is solid value and genuinely informative - they don't patronise you, which is refreshing. The visitor room has decent views across the water, though it's a bit cramped on busy days.

Walkers and serious whisky enthusiasts get the most from this. If your taste runs to lighter, smoother drams, you might find the heavily peated spirit challenging. Families with younger kids will struggle; it's not interactive enough to keep them entertained for long. Open March to October 9:45-17:00, with shorter winter hours Monday to Friday. Just a short drive from Islay Glamping Pods if you're staying overnight, which makes sense - you'll want time to explore the island properly.
