Langdale Rigg End

The walk up Langdale Rigg End rewards you with one of those views that makes the slog worthwhile. It's a proper fell rather than a gentle stroll, and at 301 metres, it demands respect even if it doesn't sound that high on paper. From Scarborough side, the approach through the moorland is bleak and windswept - which is exactly why it works. On a clear day, you can see across to the coast; on a grey one, you're enveloped in that lonely Yorkshire moorland atmosphere that either captivates you or drives you mad depending on your temperament.

Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest accessible parking, and wear proper boots. The ground underfoot is boggy in places and rocky in others, so it's not a job for trainers. The summit itself is fairly sparse - no dramatic rock formations, just moorland stretching in all directions and that satisfying moment when you've climbed higher than everything around you.

Walkers will absolutely get this one. Families with confident kids can manage it too, though the younger ones might find it a bit relentless. It's worth fitting in if you're staying at Prospect House Farm Glamping & Camping nearby - adds a proper outdoor element to a park holiday without requiring technical climbing skills.

Go when the weather's stable. This isn't a place to tackle in rain or low cloud unless you know the terrain well. Peak season crowds won't be an issue here - it's popular with locals but rarely rammed.
