Lang How

Lang How sits above Ambleside like a pulpit, a fell that doesn't demand mountaineering but absolutely rewards the climb. It's a proper walker's fell - accessible enough for reasonably fit families, steep enough to feel like you've earned the view once you reach the summit.

The climb itself takes about forty minutes from the Great Langdale valley floor, cutting through moorland and bracken with the Langdale Pikes dominating the skyline to your left. On a clear day, the vista from the top opens up across the central Lake District - Windermere to the south, the Coniston fells eastward, and if you're lucky, the Irish Sea glinting on the western horizon. It's less crowded than the major peaks and that matters on a summer weekend.

Walkers who prefer solitude over queue management will get the most from it. Families with teenagers and older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the final push a bit relentless. The fell is free to walk, naturally, and you can do the whole thing in under two hours if you're not stopping for photos and a rest at the top.

Stay at Great Langdale Glamping or the Campsite just below the valley, and Lang How becomes a natural morning outing before heading into Ambleside proper for lunch. It slots perfectly into a Lake District week - technical enough to feel like a proper walk, short enough not to dominate your day. Go on a weekday if you can and time it for late afternoon when the light turns golden and most people have already headed back to their caravans.
