Lane Hanger

A steep chalk valley carved through Hampshire woodland, Lane Hanger is the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring the countryside around Alton and wonder why it's not rammed with visitors. The walk down is properly dramatic - the path drops steeply between beech trees, and in autumn when the leaves turn, it's genuinely stunning. The valley floor opens into a small stream bed, shaded and quiet, with that cool air you only get in deep woodland. There's not much to "do" in the conventional sense. You walk down, walk back up - it's a short circuit, maybe forty minutes if you're not rushing. But that's rather the point. It's the kind of place that clears your head, especially after a wet spell when the stream's running properly. Walkers will find it satisfying. Families with older kids who don't mind a steep ascent will get something from it. Small children will likely lose interest quickly unless they're really into scrambling about on muddy banks. Free to visit, naturally. Spring and autumn are best - winter can get boggy and muddy, summer's just sweaty and fly-ridden. If you're staying at one of the nearby farms like Feather Down Manor Farm or the Wigwam Holidays site, it's a proper decent walk to fit into a morning before you settle back at camp. Not a day-trip destination on its own, but absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area. It's genuine and unpretentious - no cafe, no visitor centre, just trees and a valley.
