Lanacombe 1

A Bronze Age settlement tucked into Devon's north coast, Lanacombe 1 is one of those sites that rewards a bit of detective work to find. The remains aren't dramatically visible - you're looking at hut circles and field systems rather than standing stones - but that's precisely what makes it interesting. Real archaeologists get excited about this stuff because it shows how people actually lived three and a half thousand years ago, not just where they buried their dead.

The site sits above Lynton, which means the walk to get there is half the experience. On a clear day you get proper views across the Bristol Channel, and the surrounding moorland is lovely for a wander regardless. History enthusiasts and walkers will find more to chew on here than casual tourists. Kids might struggle with the "nothing much to look at" problem, unless they're already into archaeology.

There's no visitor facility or signage that I'm aware of, so come prepared with a map or GPS coordinates. Best tackled on a dry day - the ground gets boggy and visibility counts when you're trying to spot Bronze Age earthworks. It works well as a waypoint on a longer moorland walk, particularly if you're staying at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat down the coast. Give yourself a couple of hours if you want to properly explore the site and the landscape around it.
