Lamington Hill

The walk up Lamington Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Lowlands - nothing spectacular in the Alpine sense, but genuinely rewarding on a clear day. It's a modest peak near Biggar, the sort of place locals know well and visitors often miss entirely.

The ascent itself is straightforward, taking around an hour from the car park if you're not rushing. The paths are well-trodden and manageable for families with older children, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. What makes it worth the effort is the sense of space once you're up there - the Southern Uplands roll away in all directions, and on decent weather you can pick out landmarks for miles.

It's not a destination that demands hours. Most people do the walk, have a look around, and head back down in two or three hours total. That makes it ideal if you're based at Mount View Caravan Park and want a proper walk without disappearing for the whole day. The terrain is typical Scottish moorland - heather, rough grass, the occasional boggy patch - so waterproofs aren't optional even when the sky looks half-decent.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers after genuine exercise rather than Instagram moments. History buffs won't find much on the hill itself, but the views across South Lanarkshire's farming country tell their own story.
