Lamb Hill

The walk up Lamb Hill rewards you with proper views across the Tay Valley - the sort of prospect that makes the climb worthwhile on a clear day. It's not a long slog; most people manage it in under two hours from the base, though you'll want sturdy boots because the ground gets boggy and the gradient steepens as you near the summit.

This is very much a hill-walker's outing rather than a casual stroll. The paths are well-trodden but unmaintained in places, and the exposed ridge near the top can feel windy even when the lowlands are calm. On a grey day, frankly, there's not much to hold your interest once you've reached the top - no facilities, no views to speak of. But catch it right, and you're looking at moorland stretching away toward the Highland edge, with Perth visible in the distance below.

It suits anyone with reasonable fitness and a taste for solitude. Families with young children will find it a bit much; teenagers who actually want to walk rather than be dragged uphill will have a decent time. History buffs won't find much - no ruins, no cairns of note.

If you're basing yourself at Greenhill Farm Glamping or one of the other holiday parks within a few miles of Perth, Lamb Hill makes a solid morning or afternoon out. Leave the car at the trailhead and allow three hours door-to-door to be comfortable. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can be midgy, and winter access gets dodgy fast.
