Lakeside Park

You could walk past Lakeside Park without realising what you've stumbled into. It's a proper slice of quiet countryside wedged between Whitley Bay and the surrounding suburbs, where a lake sits ringed by trees and walking paths that actually feel removed from the North East coast's usual hustle. The water itself is the main draw - clear enough on decent days to spot waterfowl, and there's genuine peace here even when it gets busy.

The park works best for families wanting a gentle afternoon walk without travelling far from their holiday base. Kids will toddle round the perimeter track happily enough, though don't expect them to be entranced for hours - it's a lap or two and you're done. Serious walkers might find it a bit short for their needs, but it's excellent if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay Holiday Park or Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and need to burn some energy without driving anywhere.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The reserve attracts decent variety depending on season, and there's something meditative about watching the water and waiting for movement in the reeds. There's no visitor centre that I could find, and admission seems to be free, which is worth knowing.

Go early if you can - late afternoon light across the water is lovely, but the car park fills up with people doing exactly the same thing. The walk's manageable any time of year, though winter brings fewer people and better sightlines through the bare branches.
