Lake Lambert

Lake Lambert is a straightforward affair - no theme park theatrics, just a body of water that's earned its place on the Cambridgeshire map through sheer persistence and decent wildlife value.

You'll spot waterfowl year-round, kingfishers if you're lucky and patient, and the occasional angler setting up camp for the day. The walk around takes a good hour if you don't rush it, which you shouldn't. Bring binoculars. The landscape is flat and open in that particular East England way - no dramatic vistas, but oddly restorative.

Families with primary-school kids get a decent outing here, though it's not the sort of place that'll hold attention for more than a couple of hours. History types and birdwatchers will find more to occupy themselves. The lake works well as a half-day stop if you're staying at Crystal Lakes Leisure nearby - it's only 5.9 miles away and gives you a proper lake experience without leaving the region.

No facilities to speak of, so bring water and snacks. Free to visit. Best in spring or early autumn when the water's calm and the bird activity peaks. Rain doesn't ruin it here - actually makes the reflections better.
