Lake 83

Lake 83 sits just outside Cirencester, a proper spot if you're after some water and sky without the crowds you'd find at more famous reservoirs. It's a working gravel pit turned lake - nothing fancy about that, but the water's clear enough and the banks are reasonably accessible for a walk round. You won't find facilities or marked paths, which means it's either refreshingly quiet or disappointingly bare depending on your mood.

Best for walkers and anyone with binoculars. Birdwatchers rate it, and families with older kids who can manage an unmanicured lakeside amble will find it peaceful enough. Younger children might lose interest fairly quickly - there's no playground, café, or anything to do beyond looking at water and wildlife. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit, longer if you're serious about spotting birds.

It's a free stop, no admission charge or gates to worry about. Head here in spring or early autumn when migrating birds make it worth the trip. The lake works well alongside a stay at one of the nearby caravan parks - Hoburne Cotswold is closest at just over a mile away, making it an easy morning walk from your pitch. Cirencester itself is close enough for lunch or supplies, so you're not marooned. Real value if you enjoy low-key nature spots; waste of time if you need facilities or activities.
